Mobile commerce platform provider Lucova has partnered with Fresh Ideas Food Service Management and Heartland Payment Systems to integrate its Bluetooth low energy (BLE) technology into an app that provides users with the ability to make payments with a “selfie” photo.
Lucova and Fresh Ideas collaborated to roll out the FreshX mobile app in Southwestern College in Kansas. The app is designed to shorten student wait times upon checkout. Students on campus can access their meal cards, loyalty and rewards details within the app and purchase items at the checkout without pulling out their wallet or smartphone.
After downloading the app, students can add their meal card and payment information, and then load an image of themselves that can be identified at the POS. Users can then preset their payment preferences in preparation for a checkout.
Lucova integrated FreshX into its existing Heartland Payment Systems POS terminals, so that they automatically recognize the student’s ID based on proximity. Upon checkout, the app pulls up the student’s profile, name and image, for the staff member to view and validate.
“Based on advanced setting preferences, the student could pay for his or her meal completely hands free, without having to pull out their phone to hit confirm,” a Lucova spokesperson told NFC World. “Receipts and rewards points are all produced in real time and stored digitally.”
FreshX is based on the CampX mobile platform, which Lucova aims to introduce to college campuses across North America. The platform provides purchase data that could help retailers and food services gain a more accurate profile for consumers, enabling improved decision-making and operational efficiency in-store.
