Money Talks: Retailers Drop Brands Related to Trump Conspiracy Theories

Following the violent mob storming the U.S. Capitol this month, major retailers are distancing themselves from brands affiliated with spreading conspiracy theories and false claims of election fraud, according to multiple reports. Most recently, Mike Lindell, Founder and CEO of MyPillow, who is known for spreading Donald Trump’s claims of election fraud, said major retailers such as Bed Bath & Beyond and Kohl’s have stopped carrying the MyPillow product, the AP reported.

While both retailers confirmed the decision to stop carrying the brand, they diplomatically cited decreased customer demand and sales, with no mention of Lindell’s actions or support of Trump, the AP said.

Earlier this month, commerce platforms Shopify, Stripe and PayPal took the Trump Organization and Trump campaign stores offline in response to the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol. Additionally, some of the largest U.S. corporations — including Amazon, AT&T, Verizon and Walmart —have suspended donations to Republican members of Congress who objected to the Electoral College’s votes. Other companies (including retailers such as Hallmark and Target) are suspending all political donations.
