Of the 30 most frequently scanned products during the month of December, six were tablet computers, making the mobile device one of the most popular holiday gifts, according to research from ShopSavvy, a mobile shopping provider and platform.The two most frequently tablets scanned by smartphones were the Amazon Kindle Fire HD and the iPad mini.
“The tablet computer was undoubtedly the most talked-about gift item of the recent holiday shopping season,” said Rylan Barnes, Co-Founder and CTO for ShopSavvy, in a company press release. “Our data confirms plenty of consumers were using their smartphones to make their tablet choices and find the best deals.”
Televisions and video gaming components dominated the most-scanned consumer electronics items. “Call of Duty: Black Ops II” was the most-scanned video game while “The Dark Knight Rises” was the leading DVD. A juvenile fiction story was the only book appearing among the top scans, and only one traditional toy was on the list ― Hasbro’s Easy Bake Oven. In housewares, Keurig home brewing systems ruled.
The most frequently scanned items based on categories are:
- Amazon Kindle Fire HD;
- Apple iPad mini, 16GB WiFi Black;
- Apple iPad 2;
- Samsung Galaxy Tab 2;
- Amazon Kindle Fire HD, 7-inch 16GB; and
- Amazon Kindle Fired 8GB.
- Samsung 55” Class LED 8000 Series Smart TV;
- Xbox 360 Halo;

The list of products ShopSavvy users scanned most often is useful as an indicator of where shopping is headed, noted Barnes. Mobile devices and applications give shoppers immense power to gather product information, he said, and retailers are seeing the value of providing their own information at the most pivotal time ― when consumers have a product in their hands.
