Retailers Wrangle for a Piece of the Prime Day Pie

Amazon Prime Day 2021

As Amazon Prime Day approaches, more and more retailers are aiming to get in on the action with their own competing sales. Shortly after Amazon announced that its annual sales bonanza would take place June 21 and 22 this year, Walmart and Target shared news of their own competing sales. Now other retailers, including Kohl’s and Old Navy, are joining the fray.

In 2020, more than 350 retailers promoted their own sales alongside Prime Day, a 17% spike from 2019, according to research from RetailMeNot. The company also found that the average U.S. consumer plans to spend $594 on Prime Day 2021, and:

  • 92% are likely to use Amazon Prime Day to shop for back-to-school items this year;
  • 79% of those surveyed have shopped Amazon Prime Day in previous years;
  • The most popular categories people are planning to shop include clothing, shoes and apparel (44%), kitchen appliances (32%), home décor (30%), smart home products (30%), cleaning supplies (29%), at-home fitness equipment (26%) and video games and consoles (22%).

Here’s our running tally of other retailers hosting sales in tandem with Prime Day. [Editor’s Note: We’ll continue to update this list as new sales are announced. Last update 6.18.2021]

Walmart

Walmart’s “Deals for Days” savings event will take place June 20-23 with the retailer promising “Black Friday-like savings” on top items across electronics, home, toys, beauty and fashion. The sale will feature both online-only deals and exclusive savings for in-store shoppers.

Target

Target is planning “Deal Days” June 20-22, expanding its sale period by an additional day compared to 2020. The retailer is focusing specifically on what it perceives as a competitive edge over Amazon: no membership requirement and near-instant gratification for customers using same-day pickup services at its stores. Target is promising hundreds of thousands of discounts across every category — still not quite in the range of Amazon’s projected 2 million deals.

Kohl’s

Kohl’s WOW Deals event is set for the same dates as Prime Day, June 21 and 22, promising the “biggest savings event of the summer season.” The retailer is planning discounts on hundreds of products both in stores and online across the home, toys, beauty and apparel categories, with new deals launching each day. Customers also will have the opportunity to earn extra Kohl’s Cash during the two-day sale, and Kohl’s Card customers will get an additional 15% off all purchases.

Old Navy

Set for June 20-22, Old Navy is offering 50% off deals on select merchandise and 30% off all purchases June 20 and 21, bumping that up to 35% off all purchases on June 22. Old Navy cardholders also will snag additional savings in the form of 50% off all purchases (with some exclusions).

Best Buy

Best Buy has given its competing sale a tongue-in-cheek name aimed directly at Amazon: “The Bigger Deal Savings Event.” The retailer is offering savings on everything electronic including headphones, TVs, laptops, tablets and streaming devices for the week leading up to and through Prime Day, June 15-22.

Ace Hardware

While other retailers are attempting to stand out from Prime by touting the fact that their sales require no membership, Ace Hardware is taking the opposite tack. The retailer is bringing back its Ace Rewards Day for the third year in a row June 21 and 22 with online deals and bonus offers available only to Ace Rewards members. Ace Rewards members can save 15% with the code ARDAY on select regular-priced items and earn double bonus points, plus other promotions like free assembly and delivery on grills and grill accessories totaling $399 or more.

Office Depot

Office Depot‘s Discount Days June 21 – June 23 will feature savings for both online and in-store customers including up to 50% off furniture and chairs, as well as deals on PCs, tech accessories and more. Like other brick-and-mortar Prime Day competitors, Office Depot is also promoting its range of convenient, fast fulfillment options including in-store and curbside pickup options, same-day delivery and free next business day delivery on orders of $45 or more.

Bed Bath & Beyond

Bed Bath & Beyond‘s Beyond BIG Savings Event will last from June 20 – June 22 featuring free same-day delivery on orders over $39 and a rewards offer that will provide customers up to $100 for future purchases. Like others, Bed Bath & Beyond is doubling down on the fact that customers can get their purchases same-day in store and no membership is required to access the events savings.

BuyBuy Baby

Also taking place June 20 – June 22, BuyBuy Baby‘s Big Baby Savings Event promises shoppers deals both in-store and online on strollers, furniture, feeding and safety products, clothing, toys and bath items. Like parent company Bed Bath & Beyond, customers will get free same-day delivery on orders over $39 and rewards for future purchases.
