Stop & Shop Launches Branded E-Commerce Platform, Retires Peapod Name

In an effort to create a more seamless shopping experience under the Stop & Shop brand, the retailer has launched a Stop & Shop-branded e-Commerce platform and mobile app that will replace the Peapod digital platform customers previously used.

Customers’ Peapod account information and order history will automatically transition over to the new Stop & Shop Pickup & Delivery platform.

In addition, the retailer has enhanced the member benefits of the Stop & Shop GO Rewards digital loyalty program. Previously, members could redeem their GO Points for savings at Stop & Shop fuel stations and participating Shell gas stations. They can now convert their GO Points into rewards such as savings on grocery orders, or donations to a local food bank in the cash equivalent of their point totals.

Stop & Shop’s parent company Ahold Delhaize USA, which purchased Peapod in 2000, shut down the Chicago-based Midwest division of Peapod in February, eliminating 500 jobs. While Ahold Delhaize USA noted that it will continue to utilize the technical expertise of Peapod Digital Labs, which employs 450 people, the company plans to focus on “enabling each local brand to be the leading omnichannel grocery retailer in each of their markets.” In addition to Stop & Shop, Ahold Delhaize USA operates Food Lion, Giant Food (of Landover), GIANT Food Stores (of Carlisle) and Hannaford.

In July, Stop & Shop announced that it was enhancing its ability to offer same-day delivery and pickup for customers through an expanded partnership with Instacart, the addition of 50 curbside pickup locations and three new “wareroom” micro-fulfillment centers.

“Creating a seamless omnichannel experience was a strategic priority for us prior to the pandemic,” said Gordon Reid, President of Stop & Shop in a statement. “With the increased demand we’ve seen over the last several months, it’s more important than ever that we deliver improved digital solutions and online fulfillment for our customers to shop for the food and other groceries they need.”
