Target’s New Last Mile Facility Adds Next-Day Delivery for 500,000 in Atlanta Market

Target has opened a Target Last Mile Delivery (TLMD) extension near its store in Smyrna, Ga. The new facility puts next-day delivery within reach of 500,000 additional customers for a total of more than 3 million in the Atlanta market. The facility already is delivering up to 1,500 packages per day, and Target plans to ramp up its capabilities further in the coming months.

Online orders are filled at Target stores and sent to a local sortation center, where the packages are offloaded, sorted and batched for delivery to nearby neighborhoods by drivers working with Shipt or other carrier partners. Now, orders that fall outside the sortation center’s last mile delivery area are transferred to the TLMD extension, where Shipt drivers can pick them up and reach additional neighborhoods.

The TLMD debut is part of Target’s stores-as-hubs strategy and aligns with the retailer’s February 2023 announcement that it would invest $100 million to expand its sortation network to more than 15 facilities by 2026.

“TLMD extensions represent the latest milestone in our journey to deliver a best-in-class experience for our guests — however they choose to shop with us,” said John Mulligan, EVP and COO at Target in a statement. “These facilities are a continuation of our innovative efforts to serve millions of guests and reach millions more, while maximizing speed, efficiency and care across our real estate portfolio.”
