Zara Parent Inditex Aims to Cut Value Chain Emissions 50% by 2030

Inditex, parent company of brands including Zara and Massimo Dutti, will use supply chain transformation, support for biodiversity and circularity initiatives such as Zara Pre-Owned to cut emissions along its value chain in half by 2030, putting it on the path to reaching zero net emissions by 2040.

The apparel giant also will transition to exclusively using textile materials that deliver lower environmental impacts by the end of this decade. Approximately 40% of fibers used by Inditex brands will come from conventional recycling processes; roughly 25% will be next-generation fibers, some of which will be scaled up in partnership with startups identified through the Inditex Sustainability Innovation Hub; and 25% will come from organic or regenerative farming practices.

The supply chain transformation will encompass both social and environmental initiatives. Social transformation will stem from the Inditex “Workers at the Centre” strategy, while environmental actions will focus on water, discharges, chemical product management and energy.

Additionally, Inditex will support biodiversity projects for the protection, restoration or regeneration of up to 5 million hectares (approximately 12.4 million acres).

The more ambitious targets were approved by the Inditex Board of Directors at its Annual General Meeting on July 11. In her speech to shareholders, Chairperson Marta Ortega Pérez emphasized the importance of the company’s shared values: “The magic of Inditex lies with our team and values, heavily influenced by self-imposed high standards. The future is not predetermined and we must never forget that.”
