DoorDash Continues Push Beyond Food Delivery with Addition of Lowe’s

DoorDash will now offer on-demand delivery from over 1,700 Lowe’s stores nationwide, marking the platform’s first foray into the home improvement category as it pursues its goal of expanding beyond restaurants to become the “local commerce company.”

While the platform began as a tool to get fast food delivery from local eateries, DoorDash now has more than 150,000 non-restaurants on its marketplace and platform, up from 100,000 a year ago. And consumers appear to be on board with the expansion, with the company reporting that one in every five monthly active users ordered from a non-restaurant category in 2023.

The company has been on a tear the past few months, adding a host of new retailers including Sally Beauty, MAC Cosmetics, an expanded relationship with Sephora, Pet Supplies Plus, Ahold Delhaize USA, Camping WorldGolf Galaxy, JD SportsFinish Line and The Vitamin Shoppe.

Additionally, last month, Giant Eagle announced it was expanding its partnership with DoorDash to cover all its supermarkets across Pennsylvania, Ohio, Maryland and West Virginia following a 2022 pilot. This gives DoorDash a stronghold in grocery through partnerships with five of the top 10 grocers in the country, according to Fuad Hannon, Head of New Verticals at DoorDash.

“What all these retailers are excited about is getting in front of an incremental consumer,” said Hannon in an interview with Retail TouchPoints. “DoorDash has over 37 million monthly active consumers and something like 17 million are DashPass subscribers. If you think about the world that we’ve built, it’s one where you’ve got a real multi-category shopper. Over 20% of our consumers are now shopping across multiple categories and that number continues to increase year over year.”

“As Lowe’s continues its omnichannel journey, expanding same-day delivery options helps us meet our customers where they are,” said Neelima Sharma, SVP of Digital Commerce and Technology at Lowe’s in a statement. “Our collaboration with DoorDash unlocks an opportunity for us to reach new DIY customers who are shopping directly on the DoorDash app, helping them get everything they need for spring.”
