Allbirds Steps Into Apparel With Sustainably Manufactured Socks

Allbirds, the San Francisco-based shoe retailer known for its eco-friendly wool sneakers, has launched a line of socks that are available online and at the company’s five brick-and-mortar stores in the U.S.

The socks are made from Allbirds’ trademarked new material, “Trino,” which the company manufactures by combining its existing natural eucalyptus tree fibers and merino wool. The sock fibers also include recycled plastic water bottles, and their production is 100% carbon neutral. The materials are designed to keep customers’ feet sweat-free, regardless of whether they wear Allbirds shoes.

Ranging in price from $12 to $16, the socks come in six colors and three styles, including classic crew (“Tubers”), no-show (“Hiders”) and an in-between option (“Quarters”).

As consumers think more about how the items they wear are made, additional retail brands are creating or sourcing sustainable products. RepreveThought and Zkano all use recycled materials to make their socks.

Founded in 2014 and officially launched in March 2016, Allbirds has raised $77.5 million to date, according Crunchbase, with Leonardo DiCaprio participating in Allbirds’ Series C funding round in October 2018.
