Amazon Pours $1.4 Billion Into Tech Hubs, Expands Phoenix Fulfillment Operations

Amazon plans to invest $1.4 billion in Tech Hubs in Dallas, Detroit, Denver, New York City, Phoenix and San Diego, creating a total of 3,500 new technology and corporate jobs. Teams in these cities will support various businesses across the company, including Alexa, Amazon Advertising, Amazon Fashion, Amazon Fresh, Amazon Web Services (AWS) and OpsTech.

In Manhattan, where Amazon has acquired the Fifth Avenue building that previously housed Lord & Taylor, the company plans to accommodate approximately 2,000 workers in 630,000 square feet of new office space. In Detroit, the company is acquiring more than 25,000 square feet of office space to provide for 100 additional positions.

The existing Dallas Tech Hub in North Dallas will be expanded by more than 100,000 square feet to make room for 600 new tech and corporate positions, and office space in the Denver Tech Hub will grow by 20,000 square feet to accommodate 100 additional jobs. Two hundred new positions will be added in a 40,000-square-foot office expansion in San Diego.

The 90,000-square-foot Phoenix Tech Hub expansion will bring more than 500 new jobs to the metropolitan area, but it is just one element of a much larger buildout in this metro area.

11 Fulfillment And Delivery Centers To Open In Metro Phoenix

Amazon plans to open 11 new sites to support customer fulfillment and delivery operations in metropolitan Phoenix by the end of 2020, creating more than 3,000 full- and part-time jobs.

“This is big news, not only for the Phoenix area, but for the entire state of Arizona,” said Governor Doug Ducey in a statement. “The company’s decision to expand their operations here will create thousands more job opportunities for our citizens.”

“We now have more than 17,500 full- and part-time Amazon employees who call Arizona home,” said Matthew High, Regional Director of Amazon Fulfillment in a statement. He added that the new jobs will pay a minimum of $15 per hour and offer full-time employees benefits from their first day, including medical, vision and dental insurance as well as a 401(k) with a 50% company match.

The Phoenix facilities will include:

  • Seven delivery stations, which power the last mile of Amazon’s order fulfillment process;
  • Two new facilities to support fulfillment operations in the six-city metro area; and
  • A 600,000-square-foot cross-dock facility, scheduled to open in Phoenix by year’s end, that will provide 1,000 full-time positions.

Additionally, 1,000 full-time jobs will be created in the 855,000-square-foot fulfillment center already under construction in Goodyear, Ariz. The facility also will employ Amazon robotics to pick, pack and ship small items such as books, electronics and toys. An additional cross-dock facility is scheduled to open in the city in 2021.
