Target Expands Contactless Checkout and Pickup Options to Enhance Safety During the Holidays

Target is rolling out multiple initiatives aimed at improving in-store safety during the holiday season, including contactless self-checkout, skip-the-line technology and doubling the number of contactless pickup parking spots. The retailer also is expanding its selection of items available for same-day pickup or delivery, with an emphasis on gifts and ingredients for holiday meals.

Shoppers can now use the Wallet mobile payment option in the Target app to scan items with their own devices, eliminating the need to pick up an in-store scanning device. They can then check out with an associate or at self-checkout as they normally would. This option will be enhanced by the rollout of 1,000 additional MyCheckout devices, which will let more associates check out shoppers anywhere in the store.

Target also will let customers check if there is line outside their local store via the retailer’s website. If there is, they can reserve a place and receive a text notification when it is their turn to enter the location, letting them avoid waiting in person to better enable social distancing.

Shoppers looking to skip the line entirely can utilize an enhanced curbside pickup program, with nearly 8,000 more spots added to keep up with the holiday rush. Target also has eliminated the need for barcode scanning during the process, letting customers show a personal identification number in the app through their car window.

Additionally, shoppers will now have the option to adjust whether they want to receive their BOPIS orders through in-store Order Pickup or curbside Drive Up in real time, even after they have arrived at the location. This option was designed to increase flexibility and let shoppers use whichever method is more convenient at a given time.
