Lowe’s to Test LiDAR-Powered Space Measurement Tool in Q1 2022

No more wrestling with metal tape measures that bend and snap back into DIYers’ hands: Lowe’s will launch a beta test of a room scanning and measurement tool, available in the Lowe’s iOS app, by the end of Q1 2022. (An embedded video demonstrates how the solution works.)

Customers will be able to access the feature by pressing the Measure Your SpaceBETA button on select floor covering product detail pages. Using iPhones or iPads equipped with LiDAR (light detection and ranging) scanners, customers will be able to scan rooms they want to redecorate to quickly get floor plans and accurate square footage measurements.

“We see a future in which the devices customers already own can sense, understand and compile information about their home, putting it in their hands the moment they need it,” said Seemantini Godbole, EVP and CIO at Lowe’s in a statement. “We call this future spatial commerce, and we’re excited to bring it to our customers.

The technology, developed by Lowe’s Innovation Labs and Streem, an AR and AI solution provider, will be available as a commercial beta launch to iPhone 12 Pro/Pro Max, iPhone 13 Pro/Pro Max and iPad Pro users. The test will begin with flooring products, but over time Lowe’s plans to include features such as the ability to visualize flooring changes in real time as well as to incorporate other product categories and expand to additional consumer devices.
