Costco Raising Non-Union Workers’ Pay as Teamsters Strike Looms

Eduardo Barraza-stock.Adobe.com

Costco has raised the salary for most store employees to $30 per hour, according to reporting by Bloomberg and other media outlets. The pay raises, which will take effect in March, apply to the warehouse club retailer’s non-union locations. The company will add $1 per hour at the top end of its pay scale to reach $30, and $0.50 per hour at the bottom, raising these wages to $20 per hour.

The pay increases come as Costco is facing threats of a strike: earlier this month, the Teamsters Union, which represents 18,000 Costco employees, authorized a strike, effective Jan. 31 — the day their current contract runs out. In July 2024, Costco workers in Norfolk, Va. voted to authorize a strike following eight months of negotiations between the Teamsters and the retailer.

A union statement provided to Bloomberg attributed the pay hike to the pressures exerted by the negotiations and the impending labor action.
