Walmart has introduced Walmart+ Assist for customers receiving government assistance, providing memberships for half the regular fee: $6.47 per month or $49 per year. The program is available to both new and existing Walmart+ members, and the latter group will receive a prorated fee when they sign up for the program. The retailer is using SheerID to verify members’ status and eligibility for the discount.
“We at Walmart+ believe that everyone should be able to enjoy all the ways a Walmart+ membership helps them save time and money, with benefits like free shipping and grocery delivery, nationwide gas discounts and video streaming with Paramount+ at no extra cost,” wrote Venessa Yates, SVP and General Manager of Walmart+ in a blog post.
Walmart introduced the membership program in 2020 in part to compete with the immensely popular Amazon Prime program. Amazon also offers discounts on Prime membership to qualifying assistance recipients. During a recent webinar, Chris Cracchiolo, SVP and General Manager of Walmart+, said that his goal was to “get most of America” into memberships.
