Walmart will work with Solar Landscape to support 74 commercial rooftop solar projects that are expected to come online in 2024 and 2025, eventually creating nearly 43 megawatts of solar capacity for communities in Maryland and Illinois. Approximately half of the portfolio is designed to reduce energy costs for low- and moderate-income households, and Solar Landscape estimates that the combined projects will save consumers about $1 million annually on energy bills.
“Our investment in this community solar portfolio is aligned with our purpose to help people save money and live better,” said Frank Palladino, VP, Renewable Energy Strategy for Walmart in a statement. “Once operational, these projects will enhance grid infrastructure in dozens of communities in Maryland and Illinois, while expanding access to affordable clean energy and helping thousands of households save money on energy bills.”
By situating these community solar projects on commercial rooftops in densely populated areas, known as “load pockets,” where it can be tough to generate new power using traditional means, the portfolio will reduce the need for additional transmission, support the clean energy transition and accelerate development.
In March 2024 Walmart accelerated its green energy commitments, including solar and distributed generation investments, and in April 2024 Walmart reported that its suppliers had reached a 2030 climate goal of reducing, avoiding or sequestering one gigaton of greenhouse gas emissions six years early.
