SkyWire Media Optimizes The Shopping Experience With Augmented Reality

Concept:

SkyWire Media, Inc., is a cloud-based software developer that helps companies create mobile marketing strategies and applications such as the new and engaging augmented reality mobile app. Augmented reality technology combines reality and fantasy elements through the camera lens on a mobile phone.

Augmented reality works in a variety of ways. This multimedia technology allows shoppers to walk through a store and scan the aisles with their mobile cameras to see instantly all the deals and coupons available. Magazine companies tap it to animate their covers. Merchants add augmented technology to their web sites to allow customers to “try before they buy,” such as assessing how a product might look in their homes.

Team:

Founded in 2005, SkyWire Media initially offered SMS marketing solutions to businesses across industries. In time, the vendor began to integrate with third-party systems to offer seamless interfaces, mobile coupon redemption solutions and more.
In 2010, SkyWire acquired the intellectual property assets of mobile app development company Intermagine, allowing SkyWire’s product line further expansion. Currently, the solution provider offers mobile resources for businesses across sizes and verticals such as QR tags with analytic reporting and enterprise SMS solutions.

Market Relevance:

With mobile use on the rise, nearly half of consumers access retail information such as customer and product reviews and price comparisons while on-the-go and in stores. For example, 67% of retailers see the value in having customers use their smartphones within the store, and 41% say they perceive a lot of value in mobile in-store use, according to RSR Research. Dynamic in-store applications fueled by augmented reality encourage engagement via mobile to help boost foot traffic and purchases.

Delivery:

When retailers decide to provide an augmented reality app they must determine its platform (i.e. Apple iOS, Android, etc.). Then they can work with a developer to make the idea a reality by creating and publishing the app on mobile markets/app stores.
However, the key to successfully deploying an augmented reality app is marketing. Many retailers place banners outside or around store locations, promote it in print ads, and use outlets across channels to advertise the initiative.

Proof Points:

In 2007, the Technology Business Alliance of Nevada named SkyWire Media “Technology Startup of the Year.” SkyWire Media also has been featured in Business Week and other media. In June 2011, the company received approval for its Mobile Technology Patent, which allows clients to track viral SMS campaigns and push event trigger messages.
