Solution Spotlight: RFID-Enabled Solutions Streamlines Store Operations

Concept:
RFID Enabled Solutions (RES) is a global provider of business solutions that are focused on optimizing operations, reducing expenses and improving business processes using radio frequency identification (RFID). RFID is a data collection technology which uses radio signals to transmit information about an item such as a serial number or name. RES provides end-to-end RFID solutions designed to increase data accuracy and product visibility, ultimately aimed at increased revenue generation and enhanced customer satisfaction.

Team:
RES leadership, with over 30 years of retail and over 20 years of RFID experience, has led some of the major retail RFID pilots in the U.S., including rollouts with Gap, Abercrombie & Fitch and Industry Standard. The company is owned and operated by Neco Can, Kurt Domini, Ryan Jones, and Brad Chuminatto. RFID Enabled Solutions is headquartered in Dublin, OH with offices in Dayton, OH, London U.K. and Turkey.

Market Relevance:
There’s been a great deal of chatter in the industry, as RFID is poised to become ubiquitous. The technology matures into a low-cost, general technology supported by the world’s rapidly developing wireless infrastructure and Web-based software application base.

The motivation for developing a low-cost RFID technology arises from its potential as a truly automatic, real time, completely unattended identification device. Today’s optical barcodes (i.e. the UPC codes found on grocery store items) are inexpensive to produce, but rather expensive to scan because scanning generally requires that a person handle the item. Thus, optical barcodes are scanned only a few times in their lifecycle. RFID on the other hand, does not require handling. If the tagged item is in range of a reader (transmitter / receiver) antenna, it can be identified with no human attention. This makes it possible to track items continuously providing virtual knowledge to support more effective business models.

RFID has the potential to allow the reduction of “safety stock” (excess inventory held because of uncertainty in store or warehouse inventory level), and also lead to fewer instances of out-of-stock items at store shelves. Improved item traceability also enables new measures to fight supply chain fraud, counterfeiting, and product tampering. New consumer information services are also enabled by the real-time item identification that RFID offers. In cases where the history of an item must be known with great assurance (i.e. for pharmaceuticals and aircraft parts), RFID provides great value as a tracing tool. There are even RFID applications being developed for the home, such as systems to assist seniors in remembering to take their medication, and re-order the prescription when necessary.

Delivery:
The RES team is dedicated to taking their RFID solution set to market. The Asset Inventory Management System (AIMS) application and Database are designed to support multiple industries and business solutions with minimal modifications. AIMS is designed to provide a scalable, supportable, cost effective and flexible solution. It is designed to work with any RFID hardware and to communicate with any back-end systems (WMS, ERP, POS, etc).

RES uses RFID as an identifier rather than a more complex data carrier, allowing the company to work with any RFID infrastructure regardless of the technology.  Once an item is identified, the team looks up the corresponding data and translates the information into a format the existing back-end systems understand.

AIMS is designed to handle multiple attributes, such as item, asset, customer, employee, and location. The importance of AIMS’ design is the ability to use the application for many solutions. For example, in a retail store the same application can handle the inventory and the location of the merchandise, CRM-customer loyalty identification, employee time-card management, loss and stolen item identification, and store business intelligence (what is tried on, the conversion rate from dressing room to POS, what is stolen, when and from where).

Proof Points:
RES’ applications are designed to suit various industries and can be used to offer 100% product visibility throughout the entire supply chain. RES Retail Inventory Management System is being widely used among major retailers and other industry leading organizations.
