Duchess

Located in New Albany, Ohio, Duchess offers locals a spot to pick up a hot coffee, a warm sandwich and to fill up their tank. Designed with a specialty market in mind, the white board and batten exterior, with grandiose windows and outdoor seating, offers a warm welcome to new and existing customers.

Two convenient entryways flanked by oversized lanterns draw customers into the store, while bright, warm lights and unique textures spill out from inside.

Nesting tables and branded specialty bins showcase new products and key merchandising stories. The Beer Cave and refrigerated coolers are highlighted by a soft glow from the perimeter signage, while a suspended wood ceiling plane features all the classic favorites below.

The main drive aisle leads shoppers into the store from the gas canopy, with open sightlines of the entire store. Digital marketing and a warm neon glow pull visitors back into the space. Linear lighting provides directional cues at varying heights and locations. Wood textured panels are incorporated on the endcaps.

Centered conveniently between the market and fresh offerings, the checkout was designed to accommodate last-minute needs with built-in merchandisers and lotto display. Customized queue line merchandisers add a fun pop of yellow to the space.

Architectural details draw shoppers in to the deli, bakery and beverage offer, and fresh materials and merchandising add warmth and familiarity. The soft glow of “smile, coffee” rests upon a rich array of deep green tones and can be seen from outside. A signature bakery case and custom coffee condiments display complete the look.

Stacked white gloss tile and wood tones add a modern touch and a neutral backdrop to all the merchandise on display. Low merchandisers anchored to the corners allow for additional story opportunities.

Inspired by the Duchess crown, a custom board and batten was designed to add visual interest and a signature branded element. Pops of yellow and warm wood tones and a collection of visual décor creates an inviting space for customers.

Framed imagery celebrates the brand and honors the heritage of the family-owned business.

Oversized windows and columns merchandised with wine become a natural backdrop to the local flavors on display.

A signature “family traditions welcome” sign designed in frosted acrylic and white gloss finishes is mounted to a wood-tiled wall.

Englefield Oil, a family-owned business established in 1961 by FW Englefield III, opened three service stations that would eventually become the well-known convenience store and gas station it is today, called Duchess (based out of Heath, Ohio).

The brand’s new 5,500-square-foot flagship is now Duchess’ largest store to date, boasting a design that provides a fresh market look with bright lighting, open sightlines, textured finishes and warm messaging. Local is the key word to this design and new build, from the creation to execution and introduction of local products that satisfy the needs of the everyday convenience store shopper.

The new prototype — designed by Sketch Blue + Nicole Faccinto Design — joins more than 100 existing store locations, with plans for retrofitting in place.
