Retailers trying to sell healthier food options to customers can’t do much about the top reason consumers often pass them up while shopping: 69% blame cravings for unhealthy food as a key hurdle. Nearly half (49%) of consumers also cited the higher cost of healthy foods as a barrier to better eating.
However, nearly two-thirds (66%) of consumers are planning to eat more fruits and vegetables to improve their diet, and this trend offers retailers cross-selling opportunities. Among the top five foods that shoppers who purchased value-added (i.e. pre-cut/pre-washed) vegetables also had in their basket are Mexican foods such as peppers, chilies and refried beans, as well as tortillas and wraps, pre-cut fruit, salad mix and dressings/dips.
