Packaging Sustainability Trends: Clear Labeling, Lighter Products and More Post-Consumer Recycled Content

Selling sustainable products also requires using sustainable packaging, and major brand names like Apple and Coca-Cola are making big changes. Between the last two generations of iPhones, packaging used for the product has decreased in weight by 34%, while Coke’s 20-ounce PET plastic bottle slimmed down 25% of its weight from January to October 2023.

In addition to the continued shift toward lighter packaging, key trends in this area include:

  • Clear labeling that shows how to properly dispose of or recycle packaging;
  • Increased usage of bare minimum packaging, especially for products that are purchased online; and
  • Promotion of active sustainability commitments, such as partnerships with NGOs.
