At its annual gala on Nov. 4 in New York City, Delivering Good will present former Chairman and CEO of Macy’s Terry Lundgren with its Lifetime Achievement Award. The charity cited Lundgren’s long career in retail as well as his support for a wide range of educational and philanthropic causes as inspirations for the honor.
“Terry Lundgren’s leadership and generosity are legendary across the retail industry and the world,” said Andrea Weiss, Chair of Delivering Good in a statement. “His career achievements, as well as his decades-long commitment to philanthropy, the arts, medical research and education, make him an inspiration to so many of us.”
Lundgren retired as Executive Chairman of Macy’s in 2018 after 14 years as Chairman and CEO. He began his career in 1975 with a division of Federated Department Stores, then joined Neiman Marcus in 1988 where he rose to the position of Chairman and CEO. He returned to Federated in 1994 and as CEO of Macy’s (which was known as Federated Department Stores until 2007), he led the company’s 2005 acquisition of May Department Stores, effectively doubling the company’s size.
A University of Arizona alumnus, he has personally established scholarships for students and supported the school, which named its retailing center the Terry J. Lundgren Center for Retailing in 2005. Lundgren has been acknowledged for his achievements and philanthropy by organizations including Carnegie Hall, MoMA, the Fresh Air Fund, the American Jewish Committee, NOW Legal Defense, the Parsons School of Design and the Fashion Institute of Technology.

This year marks the 35th anniversary of Delivering Good, which directs new product donations from hundreds of companies in the fashion, home and children’s industries. The gala also will honor recipients of the charity’s Vanguard Award, Company of Change Award and Impact Award.
