Giant Food Launches Ecommerce Marketplace Featuring Non-Grocery Products

Giant Food has launched the Ship2Me marketplace on its website, which will add tens of thousands of new items that expand Giant’s online selection beyond traditional grocery. The categories, chosen to complement the retailer’s primary offerings, including health and beauty, home décor, seasonal items, kitchen and dining, outdoor, pets and premium pantry products.

The service will be available to Giant customers in Washington, D.C., Maryland, Virginia and Delaware. Ship2Me selections can be added to a cart alongside any Giant Pickup or Giant Delivers orders in a single seamless checkout process.

“At Giant, we are always looking for ways to give time back to our customers and make our services more convenient and accessible,” said Gregg Dorazio, Director of Ecommerce for Giant Food in a statement. “The introduction of Ship2Me allows Giant to expand its assortment within traditional and nontraditional grocery categories, making it the most seamless one-stop-shop for our customers.”

Ship2Me items are always delivered at no cost and with no minimum order. Additionally, these purchases are worth loyalty points in the Giant Flexible Rewards program. Giant will continue adding more vendors and products to Ship2Me in the coming months.

Marketplaces are projected to account for $5 trillion in sales worldwide by 2025, which has made them an attractive investment for retailers across the industry. Three notable marketplaces opened up in March 2021 alone, each with a different approach to the business:

  • Hudson’s Bay, which expects to have more than 500 third-party sellers by the end of 2021;
  • Lands’ End, which features 24 curated brands to create a smaller catalog of highly visible partners rather than an open Amazon-style marketplace; and
  • Verizon Media, which launched Yahoo! Shops as a combination marketplace and advertising solution that offers each seller a personalized storefront.

Additional marketplaces are still in the works. Michaels is currently seeking sellers and solution providers for its upcoming invite-only marketplace, which will be aimed at “high-volume sellers of components, tools or craft materials.”
